Your Next Session

For Your Next Session

Homework: I used to assign homework for our second session.  Now I encourage people to choose from among a number of activities based on the direction they want to go.

Guidelines:  Sometimes people wonder how they should be in a session.  Here are some guidelines:

  • No need to be polite. I've heard it all (or most of it) before.
  • Be Open.  Be willing to explore uncomfortable thoughts, feelings and stories.
  • Be Curious: We won't just stick with the facts; we need to work with emotions, thoughts, judgments etc. connected to events in your life.
  • Share: This is designed to be a place where you can talk about the most secret parts.  Saying them aloud is often helpful in and of itself.
  • Be Patient: Understand that real change takes time.
  • Define what you want to get out of the sessions.  Feel free to tell me if we're not hitting the mark.
  • Come Prepared.  If you are wondering what you will say, it may be helpful to write down a few things beforehand.   Use the buttons at the top of this page for inspiration.

Notebook: Some people like to get a notebook for their therapy work.

  • Although some people like using a computer or phone, it's helpful to have a physical notebook.
  • Some people like lined pages, others like a blank page.
  • It is helpful to have some kind of bookmark.
  • Some people like to have two different kinds of notebooks.
  • One is a daily journal.  You will use one page per day.   We try to keep these short so you may want to make this one small in size to make the two different.
  • Another is a regular sized journal, used for your regular journaling (at whatever pace your journal).  Since you’ll use the two for different purposes and likely at different rates, it’s important to keep them separate.
